This time I don't have renter's insurance to cover my stuff for the trip to Chicago. Uhaul offers insurance for the truck and I think my stuff too for $98 and the auto transport which covers the car for additional $10. any opinions? I will be driving back in Dec. (possibly in the snow, I hope not)

Call your auto insurance carrier, and ask if they cover the van as a rental car. Your car insurance should cover anything happening to your car. Belongings? No clue.

Definitly call your car insurance company. Some will cover you driving any vehicle, but other's won't (mine will, but oftentimes the contract you sign says that you have to basically pay for the amount it would cost to replace the car, not blue book, and any time they lost renting it out-that insurance won't cover). If your insurance doesn't cover it, I wouldn't risk it. I've found that renters insurance will cover the move but car insurance won't. That being said, it may be worth getting renters insurance before you move instead of UHaul's. Mine was less than $100 for the entire year in Chicago and it included my moves.

How do you feel about watching all your possesions go up in flames when an 18 wheeler rams the back of you on an icey road? Of course you need insurance!-- See if your auto insurance or your current homeowners insurance provides any coverage.

GET THE FREAKING INSURANCE! Sorry for yelling but I have found out the *very* hard way that insurance companies will not cover a u-haul type truck that is about a certain weight range (& that weight is really low), so please get the insurance. And make sure it covers the truck as well as any other vehicle in case of the collision. This is one place you don't want to cheapen out on (ask me some other time how I know the value of this).

I agree with jessiegirl about the renter's insurance- mine is only $100 for the year and it covered my move as well.
