IMO an SRO at the Irving Park YMCA is a better option than a studio anywhere near $400 in any neighborhood where you could find such a unit, if you just must have your own personal space.

Then again, an SRO is basically like having 30 (probably strung-out) roommates so at that point you're probably better off taking on one roommate in an entry-level 2-bedroom unit in a tolerable neighborhood.

That's what I was thinking. If you multiply that $400 times X number of roommates there are decent enough 2 BRs for $800 or 3 BRs for $1200 in neighborhoods that aren't horribly unsafe. You're not going to be in Gold Coast or Lincoln Park, and you're not going to be in a gut rehab "luxury" condo, but it's going to be infinitely better than any studio you might find for $400.

You can get a decent 3 bedroom in Bridgeport for $1,200.

Get a better job. Minimum you'll be paying for a studio is 700 unless you want to live in the ghetto.

An SRO with a shared bathroom, yes.

Of course. The OP just asked if it was possible to get a studio in Chicago for under $400. If they had asked if it was possible to get one that isn't terrible, my answer would be different.

Not necessarily. I know someone living in Rogers Park near Loyola paying in the low $600s for a "studio" (it's honestly the size of a typical one bedroom, but with no doors between the rooms).

Yep. There are plenty of neighborhoods that aren't "ghetto" that have studios for under $700. For $700 you can get one in Lakeview.
