I live in the South and if we haven't had any snow yet, I use this website to find the nearest snow cover. It's updated daily.

It's a nice place where the hills vary and they have instruction.

Our friends live next to Bittersweet in Otsego. If the above map is any indication this far away from Christmas, a ski resort is probably your best option. It's a nice drive from Chicago too but not too far away.

I've been there (20 years ago) and had a good time. Nice day trip.

Too bad the toboggan runs are gone.....they were so much fun. There is a place in SW Michigan
for skiing also (guessing it would be about a 2 hour drive) had several friends who enjoyed Swiss Valley.
note- have to keep in mind about the lake effect snow if heading east from Chicago. There were
times we had to turn back once you get near LaPorte, Indiana.

I know, I remember my parents and grandparents taking me there as a little kid. It was a blast. I'm sure it was way too much of a liability for the City to keep them up and running.

^^^It was a blast. I heard a while back that there were some people who tried to save those runs (for historical
as well as entertainment for the area) but it failed.

Since this thread has been dug up...

The toboggan chutes have been gone for a long while now but there is still a mean hill. Took my family there maybe 5 years ago and it was a blast. We cracked a few sleds that day.

About an hour west of the city is Blackwell Forest Preserve. They have a hill and roads you can drive around in. Its very pretty.
