Hi, we are visiting Chicago for a few days after Christmas to have soemthing to do, go do kid stuff. One of the things they would like to do is to see snow - never seen it, having lived in S. Texas all their lives. Is there somewhere we could drive to (we'd rent a car) that is less then 3 hours away where we could see snow, sled, play? We are staying in downtown Chicago

Obviously it really depends on the weather - there's a very good chance you won't be able to find snow close to the city, although if the weather cooperates there may be plenty of snow in the area.

The closest area that is more likely to have snow than the city is the SE corner of Lake Michigan (Michigan City through to Benton Harbor on I-94). Weather patterns frequently create lake effect snow in that area. There are plenty of parks (Indiana Dunes, Warren Dunes, etc.) right on the lake that are about 1-1/2 hours from the Loop.

Within the city, there is a sled hill by soldier field where they make snow even if there isn't any:

If there is snow around, there is a decent hill by Montrose beach just off of Lake Shore dr where kids often go sledding once it snows.

If you want to venture out further, Wilmot "Mountain" has tubing / skiing. They also have plenty of snow machines, so you should be good even if the weather is milder. Wilmot is just over the state line in Wisconsin, about a 75-90 min trip from downtown Chicago if there is light traffic.

Mount Trashmore.

Oakton and Dodge, accross from Home Depot.

A great hill for sledding.

*edit, after googling Mt. Trashmore, it seems like it's prohibited.

But I never had problems. I used to go winter 08-09 and earlier. Not sure how it's regulated now.

P.S. You will thank me after you sled there

That is funny.

Check the FAQ page of the Superdawg, their FAQ's are video based.

Bittersweet Resort. 2 1/2 hours from Chicago and they have snow now!

It's a nice place where the hills vary and they have instruction.

Just to clarify a bit more for clarksvillemom, we don't currently have any snow on the ground in greater Chicagoland as of December 3rd, and we often don't have any over Christmas. It's a bit of a crap shoot. Chicago tends to get snowfalls in December that melt after a few days, and we typically don't have permanent snow cover until later in the winter (though anything is possible this time of year).
