I live in the garden unit of a converted single family home that is now 2 units. How do I receive large packages at my new apartment if my mailbox doesn't have a buzzer? Will they open the gate and knock on my actual door instead to deliver the package? I usually like to leave the gate locked because I have a dog, and for the added security, so what happens if they try to deliver it when the gate is locked?

I think it's usually customary for them to leave a note and have you pick it up at one of their distribution centers/offices isn't it? I guess I'm not speaking from experience in Chicago, but elsewhere I have lived in places that aren't exactly urban, they usually do that when they try and deliver and I'm not home.

The protocol is generally for the delivery person to leave a sticky note with instructions. Among the options you can usually instruct the delivery person to leave it with a neighbor.

So they won't even open the gate, even if it is unlocked? I order a ton of packages online off amazon and whatnot, so I'm not liking the sound of this...

Can you leave special instructions with Amazon for the shipping upon purchase?

I believe this is possible. Would a note on my mailbox instruction them to open the gate or call my phone do any good?

I would think if you can leave them instructions to call your phone, that would be better than leaving a note for all the world to see that your gate is unlocked..

If the gate has a key lock a buzzer would not really be feasible as you'd still need some remote solenoid and I doubt a landlord wants to invest in something so costly for just one unit...
