It was revived so people that have been asking about Garfield Park lately can see it.

OK now that the post is like 2 years old. I'd like to say that it's totally different now. I would die to live in this area because I dont have to deal with any other bus than the Kedzie/Kimballs, and the Madison. it's quick as hell to get downtown from the green line, the food is decent, there are alot of cops, white/mexicans moving in, and a very friendly demeanor if your out in the day and are a happy person. Don't tapp into negative energy and it won't affect you EVER. I'm always in the worst hoods going to friends houses that have lived there their whole life. When I get there the first time I always ask if it's alright, like Fulton and Sacramento, or Pulaski and Lake, or North and Hamlin. Every hood in Chicago if it's not a project community is pretty friendly. If you have a reason to be there and they mess with you. Just point out the obvious.like "Ive live on this street for 3 years hi" Dont carry money and if you do put it in your shoe. And if your a girl just be safe. Get some mace. East Garfield Park is ok, the kids are what make it crazy, but who wasn't pushing boundries when they were 16 at 3:30pm after school just got let out?
I'm moving there, Kedzie and Madison, I want to. I like the feeling, it reminds me of Texas, the southern feel and just attitude. Noone can beat the price either so **** mine as well live cheap and get to work in 20 minutes.

There is a much better chance if you live in this area you will die prematurely than in many other areas.

I live at Lake and California and it is not that bad at all. We have been there since Nov of 2007 with no problems. Things are changing slowly...but I have seen change for the better. We are getting a new Johnny's Ice House...which is exciting! Any questions on EGP, just let me know...I will do my best to answer.

California and Lake, not safe
Stoli,
I understand you live in EGP and have a vested interest in the area. I live and own in Humboldt Park since 2006 and it is not a playground. I live in the better part (northern) of Humboldt Park, near Logan Square, but even here it is not a great area. South of grand and division west of the park is just bad news and plain ghetto. EGP is even worse, though admittedly GP is far worse, similar to Austin.
The Conservatory is great but that area is not really livable until you get east of western. And now with all the new projects being built between Damen and Western I would stay east of Damen for safety, preferably east of Ashland.
Stay east of Ashland when looking to buy a condo south of Kinzie. North of Kinzie (train tracks) you can probably go as far west as Western or even California, though it does get shadier as you go west.
Johny's Ice House would help the area, especially all the emptiness, but I would fear its customers might get robbed or their cars vandalized or broken into by your neighbors in EGP. Not a safe area, but hopefully getting better, though I think it will take awhile.
