Many still do. I thik it's a location-specific kind of thing.

In the last 2 years there have been 22 murders and 78 additional shootings in EGP. If EGP isn't a violent ghetto, then what is?
If EGP isn't a violent ghetto, we might as well stop comparing neighborhoods and start pretending there are no qualitative differences between them. Just don't expect me to play along, especially when someone comes here seeking comparative information about various neighborhoods.

East Garfield Park has one of the highest crime rates of any neighborhood in the city of Chicago. So, you're basically saying that one of the most crime-ridden, violent neighborhoods in Chicago is not a violent ghetto? If it's not, then there is no such thing as a violent ghetto anywhere.
Now, you could make the argument that living in one of Chicago's most violent neighborhoods isn't as bad as people think it is. I might buy that. But East Garfield Park is STILL a violent ghetto and is one of the worst neighborhoods in the city for crime, gangs, and drugs. There's no denying it. The stats back me up.

It is obvious that neither of you know what you are talking about, so my advice to both of you is to take a drive or a bike ride down Washington Boulevard to the Conservatory. On the way back, take Chicago Avenue.
When you are finished, come back here and tell us which is the violent ghetto, and which is not, and why.

Yeah, I'll get right on that. As soon as you tell me how one quantifies violence by taking a drive or bike ride.
Since you have frequently demonstrated on these boards that you have no idea what you're talking about, I'll give your suggestion all of the consideration it merits: approximately zero.

I've spent plenty of time in East Garfield Park. Am I afraid to visit the neighborhood from time to time? No. Am I scared out of my wits to go to the conservatory on the "L"? No. Would I want to live my entire existence there on a day to day basis? No ****ing way.
The stats show that East Garfield Park is among the worst spots in the city for crime. Sure, some parts are worse than others, but any neighborhood is like that. I think people generally over-sensationalize the problems in bad neighborhoods, so when people are able to walk through one without getting killed or raped they think the neighborhood is better than it is.

Here's an example of how bad East Garfield Park is:
According to the CPD 2006 Annual Report, the East Garfield Park Community Area had 11,479 index crimes per 100,000 residents that year. The Englewood Community Area had 10,084 index crimes per 100,000 residents. Index crimes include murder, criminal sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.

I cannot believe anyone can say EGP is not that bad. Well maybe if that person moved from Detroit or Gary I could believe it...

Logan Square is a mixed bag, so it's not on the level of its neighbor south such as Bucktown/Wicker Park.
