Hello everyone. I will be visiting Chicago from the DC/Baltimore area for New Years and I want to do something fun. I have been looking on the internet and nothing looks appealing. I want to go somewhere that has a mix of music and people. Somewhere very unpretentious--just fun. My husband and I are in our 30's. I grew up in Indiana and I used to go to Chicago all the time for shows at the Double Door, Lounge Ax, etc. However, I don't want to see live music; I want to hang out and dance a bit. A place with a mix of pop, 80's, hip-hop, rock music - you know, no hip DJs. Also, I don't want to feel uncomfortable dressed up. Any ideas? Thanks so much!!

I saw that but there's nothing like getting first-hand advice from people who have been to these places. Also, I didn't mention in my post but I really want to avoid major crowds. I guess a bar that has a dance area would be better than a club. Thanks!

Well, anywhere in Chicago will really have a major crowd......
I've been to a few good hotel parties, but I don't think they are offered anymore. That's something to check out though.

Metromix is a good link to search for those places that play the 80's music your looking for. I'm not into that, so I can't recommend anyplace.

As for myself and my boyfriend, we usually head towards Downtown early, park near the shuttle bus stops and travel/walk by shuttle all night and meet up with friends. The shuttles are not CTA buses but look like an antique bus in Red or Green w/Red or Green trim and they're free! You'll see the shuttle stop signs as you get closer east towards Michigan Ave.

We don't make reservations anymore as we like to take it all in, but if there's somewhere special you want to eat at, or be when the clock strikes midnight, you should definitely do so. You'll see people dressed in casual to formal attire on that night, depending on who you hang out with. So if you and your Husband are dressed up, you won't feel out of place.

Hope you enjoy your stay.

No doubt hipsters will be in abundance, but Justice is playing the Congress on NYE.
