Default New Year's eve in Chicago

So I have been thinking about moving to chicago and have researched it quite a bit. This forum has been extremely helpful so I thank all of you for that.
I have a few days off (finally) for New Year's and that will be the only time I can get up there to check out some places. Odd time, but its my only option.
Any suggestions for a gal on New Year's Eve? I will be alone, so hopefully safe in a good part of town...
Thanks!

Many major or indie or whatever bands play New Year's Eve shows in Chicago. I do not know what your taste is,but going to one of these big parties might be a way for you to meet some people. Usually the big party for the ball drop is at Navy Pier where you can watch fireworks also. We dont do a big thing like in N.Y.C.'s Times Square, nor do we have an extremly electric sign filled downtown anymore, which is kind of a shame. But there are many parties where hundreds if not thousands of people go to as well as every bar small and large in the city. Here is a list of some shows and events...Just some ideas...google them for more info to suit your tastes:-)

I would be interested in anywhere that I can get a good feel for the kind of people I will meet. I have never just moved to a new city all by myself before so I am a little worried about meeting friends. I hope I can...
I will be living in Lincoln Park or somewhere in the Loop, but will not be moving until probably February (For the great weather ).

the thing that sucks (sorry, no other way to say it!) is that on New Years a lot of the bars sell tickets....it usually includes a show, drinks, or some other kind of "package" usually you end up paying a lot to go to one place, and it is hard to go somewhere else because they are full, or require you to pay another $60 for the package....its very hard to bar hop on New Years Eve.....which would really be more fun.

At least, this is how things have always worked for me......have things changed? Cause each time I have felt let down and like it was a waste of money...

the el was free though

I usually favor the giant party-type situations over the bars. If I want to get hit on and have someone spill a drink on me, I can do that at any time of the year.

New Years is a time to get dressed up

I generally try to find a friend who is having a party. New Years is one night of the year I don't feel like hitting the bars.

New Years in Chicago is always a huge party. The outside stuff is usually cold however.

Will you be with anyone? If so, you should line up your tickets for a bar right away. They usually do all-you-can-drink specials. Another more mellow option is to do a Prix-Fixed dinner at a nice restaurant. Many restaurants offer this on New Years Eve. I think the Field Museum often has a big party for singles as well, though I can't remember being the 30-something married guy I am... There are other parties going on downtown that might be more fun if you're on your own, and I would look at MetroMix or Time Out Chicago to get the scoop.
