Hegewisch is the best example..the only white city neighborhood that no one's ever heard of. In fact, I think some people in hegewisch have never heard of it. They used to have a T-shirt in the 70's saying "Where the hell is Hegewisch?". I even saw I guy in Florida wearing it.

I know Hegewisch. Used to work with a woman that grew up there. I can't think of any "poor" white neighborhoods.

Agreed. Not to start a class war, but "working" or "middle" class may be a better way to define many of the neighborhoods you've all been discussing.

I think the OP meant to ask about predominantly white neighborhoods in Chicago that were a bit lower income than a more "chi chi" area like Lincoln Park or Ravenswood.

This doesn't exactly indicate "poor" so much as "affordable."

My suggestion goes toward the Portage and Irving Park areas. In fact, much of the Northwest side might qualify. In those areas, I see mainly working and middle class Europeans - predominantly Polish and Eastern Euro's.

Just my 0.02

Are you still working class if your bungalow is worth $500,000?

Some people are middle class economically and working class socially. Before I retired from the boilermakers I was making enough to be solidly middle class economically but I did it wearing Carhartts and belonging to a trade union. Of course now Carhartts are considered trendy but only if you don't work in them.

Yeah if you bought it or owned it more than 10-15 years ago(and in some areas more like 5 years ago) before the huge inflation in housing prices and values. Why would you not be working class still?
