Are you a social person who likes to go out to bars/clubs/lounges, restaurants, etc or do you not care about that type of thing? Also, do you want a studio or 1 bedroom?

Okay, before I make some recommendations - how many minutes commute on the train, maximum, will you be willing to do each way?

What type of work will you be doing at the Merchandise Mart? Live in Chinatown.

Chinatown would be a good bet, its close to the loop and has an L stop and you will meet other people you can converse with there.

Yes, if you can find a 1 bedroom that is. Sometimes the listings are hard to find, and they are also listed under Armour Square. Bridgeport too maybe, though you'd have to walk to Merch Mart from the transit station a little bit from either of these. An area like Ravenswood/Lincoln Square could be an option too.

Chicago's Chinatown isn't very big so you won't have to go too far to be immersed in English, yet you'll still have a dose of familiarity in your immediate surroundings. Unless you literally never travel beyond a few blocks from central Chinatown, you'll have plenty of opportunities to strengthen your English skills.
