Signing a lease in Chicago is really hard!
Hi all,
i have a question for you. i am moving to chicago mid-january, and with that being said i am looking for an apartment. my cousin saw one and sent me pictures. i did like it, so i called the agency and they said i cannot sign the lease till i come here and see it myself/ is this stupid or is it just me? i told her i will give her two months deposits so she does not have to worry about me backing out when i get there. she said no can do because they had trouble in the past/ now i have no choice but to take a trip out there, just to see the place and then start the paperwork.
does anyone have any suggestion to come around this issue? any insights from the realtors in this forum?
i still don't undertand how she cannot do this even though i told her i am ok with sending her two month deposits.
needless to say, there is no guarantee she will hold the apartment for me till e get there.
i am annoyed at this point. it is changing my mind to move to chicago. i thought signing a lease was easy, but not in chicago.
anyone has any idea/
please, anything will help.
thanks.

It's probably in your best interest to see what apartment you'd be living in before you signed yourself into it for a year. The pictures could look really pretty but when you pull up in the moving truck and something else shows up, it'd cost you big time to back out.
Their policies are probably as much to protect you as them.
If you really insist on not coming to visit before you move, try some other agencies/landlords, but it shouldn't jade how you view the city.

Why would you sign a lease and pay money for a place you have never seen with your own eyes in person?
So you are going to move in a place blindly without seeing what your new "hood" is like and so forth?
If that is what you desire, try another agency.
I would never do what you seek to do. To each is his own.
You know, it is possible they have been scammed before.

Why do you assume this is a Chicago thing? I wouldn't be surprised to see a responsible landlord do this anywhere. Anyway, it's not necessarily typical, though most landlords run thorough credit checks and require an application fee. I can't imagine basing my decision to relocate to a new city on something like this.

I moved to Tampa and I had to be here to sign the lease, etc as well. That is not a Chicago thing (that being said, I would NEVER ever move into a place I hadn't seen before anyway!). I've never had a problem signing a lease in Chicago. As others suggested, this is to protect both of you! I would take a weekend, come here and find a nice place!

Do NOT sign a lease without checking a place out. That is just a recipe for disaster.

I get it. Your cousin saw it and you trust your cousin. You don't have time to come see the place. Just keep in mind that this isn't just a Chicago thing, and remember that we've got two big ol' airports, and flights aren't that expensive from most locations in the states. If you need to, you could even fly in that morning and fly out that night.
Just a thought.

When I was moving up here my boyfriend we flew in, checked out apartments, stayed at the (very classy) Red Roof Inn, and then flew home the next day. It was stressful and a pain in the ass, but I am so glad we did. We had a list of places we wanted to see, but while looking around found another place we hadn't planned to see. We ended up liking it best and moving there. There are some things you just can't accomplish as easily from far away. Though, thank god we have the internet. That sure makes moving to a new city an easier experience!!

You'd be much better off seeing the place first.....especially in a city with such diverse housing as Chicago.
At the end of the day though....it's her place. She can say what she wants.
