Total Salaries & Wages: $1,343,032,000

The number listed is only for Cook County. The City payroll is not included. I think city workers work maybe 3-4 hours a day at most and get paid for 8. Streets and San---I hope that was a joke. Cause they are.

An example of theft:
COPYRIGHT 2005 Chicago Tribune
Apr. 24--Cook County officials have long promised to rein in runaway overtime costs, but payroll records show that more than 100 county workers were each paid $50,000 or more in overtime last year, with one industrious nurse pulling down $187,500 in extra pay...

I don't know why the US Attorney is not going after the County, but after the city and state. The County is a hotbed of corruption.

Yes, I have been waiting. In fact, I called the USA to complain about the late return of the recent election results. My sister works for the county, I mean actually works - one the few, for which she suffers greatly from her 'peers' - and it is a sinkhole plumbing depths far greater than those by Ryan, Daley or Rod.

Doesn't this also include teacher pay and pension? I think that is why payroll is so high?

The County of Cook does not pay teachers. Whole LAYER of other taxing bodies. Yes, the County does have plenty of employees with pensions, but as there are SEPARATE line items for PENSION I kinda think that Salary & Wage only includes salary & wage...
The county's biggest category of salary is probably going toward employees at the hospital, but the Sheriff/Prison and the Courts are hugely expensive too. Juvenile justice is a giant money pit. Running down the list there is big group of road crews. Various Forest Preserve workers. County zoning department is small. Administrative roles and the staff to keep the money rolling in...
It would be very interesting to see a legitimate investigation into how the cost structure compares to DuPage or Lake Co in Illinois. Might also be fun to see what sorts of comparisions you could do the Madison WI, LA, Houston.
To really shine a light into the mess the study would have to delinate just how many people have VERY well paying positions / gilded benefits in Cook Co. Pretty sure THAT is where the Toddler would REALLY look like the swindler he is...
