I advise you to put some money on a fare card you can buy at a fare machine at the trainstation at Midway so you can save some money. If you are only going to use the train and bus to and from the airport only, put $ 4.50 or $5 on each card. Visitors passes might be better for you if you are going to use the bus or train more than just going to or from the airport. I believe you can buy them at Midway. Call the CTA to be sure. 1-888-YOUR-CTA

Unlimited rides.
1-Day Visitor Pass for $5
2-Day Visitor Pass for $9
3-Day Visitor Pass for $12
5-Day Visitor Pass for $18

Midway Airport Orange
Line Station
4612 W. 59th St.
Visitor Pass Vending Machine available 24 hours per day
Accepts credit and debit cards

I was sweating for the last day or so with word of the proposed CTA job action on Sunday-Monday, but that threat appears to be gone for now.

OK, to revise my original question now: We arrive at Midway 10 PM Sunday. Maybe one bag between the two of us. Here's the options from the RTA transit planner, plus a couple of options of my own:

1. Orange Line to State/Lake, then Red Line to Clark/Division, then #22 bus to the hotel (644 W Diversey)
2. Orange Line to Clark/VanBuren, then #36 bus to hotel
3. Orange Line to somewhere in the Loop, then taxi to hotel
4. Shuttle bus from Midway to hotel ($30)

What option would you choose in this situation, balancing safety, cost, and exposure to the elements?

We plan on getting either a farecard or 2-day visitor pass (normally go for the visitor pass since we like to ride around when we can). I've bought them at O'Hare before but not Midway. Best to have exact change in case the card reader or modem is out of service. (My new employer apparently will put money each month on a Chicago Card, but not till I actually start working for them.)

BTW, Chicago60614: we're here on a househunting visit, so very little time to spend downtown this time.

If it's really cold (as it probably will be) I'd take a taxi off the orange line, though I wonder how hard it would be to find that late. The loop is kind of dead by then. Someone who is there that time more often might be able to tell you the best place to get off the orange line in the hopes of getting a taxi.

Your other option would be Orange line to State/Lake transfer to Red line. Take that to Fullerton. Then take a cab (around 5 bucks for that distance). Cabs are plentiful at the Fullerton/Halsted/Lincoln intersection just east of the el stop, even at that time of night. It will save you from waiting too long in the elements for a bus, as they aren't all that frequent that late on a sunday night.

Although to be honest, since its only 30 bucks, and you won't face any traffic, I'd probably just take the shuttle.

Train/Cab option:

How about take the Orange Line to Clark/Lake and (cross using the bridge to the other platform) switch to the Brown Line get off at Fullerton or Belmont and catch a cab from there.

Much easier than switching to the Red Line in my opinion. No elements to deal with really either.

You could even walk to the hotel from the Belmont or Fullerton stop or Wellington for that matter if its not too bad out. Its maybe a half mile at most walk from Wellington or Belmont.

That's funny, I don't know why I didn't even think about the brown line.

How about just get off at Wellington and walk? I'd just walk over to Clark and then down to Diversey and the hotel's sitting right there. It's about an extra 3 or 4 minutes of walking versus walking from the Diversey stop which was the original plan.

Not to mention, total cost = $2 per person.
