Just to clarify- Chicago tourist areas are safe, very safe. Tourism is big business in Chicago, and they protect that. Plus the OP has a group, which adds even more safety. In short, I'd just say don't let a bargain price lure you too far off the beaten path. Go to Chicago.

If the OP is really serious about 6-8 rooms at up to $200 a night I would start making calls to the individual hotels themselves. They can and do offer "block rate" discounts for things like this. I know that there are some very nice "botique" hotels that are extremely convenient to the shopping / dining on North Michigan Ave that would be perfect for a "girls weekend" .
