The Holiday Inn and Suites on Higgins Rd in Rosemont has reasonable prices and is in a safe area. They also have
a shuttle.

Is this thread for real? Get a grip people. It's perfectly safe for a normal citizen to stay in most any hotel around ohare and go about their business and it's perfectly safe for a normal level headed person to leave ohare and go to a spot in Hyde Park after dark if they know where they're going and have an address. These aren't DANGEROUS things.

Just go there when you get into town from the airport. There are 3 million people in the city and most of them live in non-violent areas. Regardless of the fact most of the violence is young criminals against other young criminals. Hyde Park is a nice area, there are rough areas around it, but I assume you didn't get a dirt cheap house in the ghetto. You'll also be with multiple people. Just keep calm and collected and go to your new house and you'll be fine. Crime in chicago is not as bad as the headlines everywhere if you're not a criminal to begin with.

There are different degrees of how people view "safety". There's safe as in you won't even be leaving the hotel property, and the surrounding area is near a campus or is comprised of other hotels, or a nice, quiet community. Then there's safe as in as long as you aren't in a warzone, you're fine. Needless to say, there are no areas around O'Hare that could even nearly qualify as a "warzone", however, there are different types of crime around here, much as stated earlier, and not to mention, the fact that many "sketchy" people run and stay at some very low cost hotel/motels around ORD. For example, the Motel 6 in Schiller Park. Not in a warzone, but the surrounding area, especially at night, will probably attract some debatable people as to whether or not you'd want to be around them. A dark forest preserve across the street and a 24 hour Denny's that probably attracts extreme drunks and scumbags at night probably isn't what most people would consider "desirable" or "safe".

The OP is inquiring as to whether it makes more sense to stay in a cheap motel around ORD or head directly to their new apartment in Hyde Park when arriving after the PM rush.

In this context it is flat out silly to do other than head to their new apartment.

The relative "threat to safety" in any apartment close to the UofC compared to hassles / yuck factor(from "non-smoking rooms" that clearly smell like ashtrays, to places infested with bed bugs, to whores and addicts in the rooms next door) in a cheap motel strongly favors apartments in Hyde Park, PLUS it is stupid to waste money on a crummy motel that could be used for a cab ride and nice dinner in Hyde Park...

There are nicer hotels around ORD but given the fact that the OP is already flying in with parents it makes zero sense to waste money on a nicer place. The majority of out-of-town visitors to UofC would likely not even ask about such a things; the OP needs to "reset" their understanding of the likely level of safety they'll be facing...

I second this summation.

I'll also recommend this, although I don't think that the OP has responded yet..

Do not throw away money on a hotel room--go straight to your new apartment.

Yes, go straight to your new apartment. But do it because it makes sense, not because all of the hotels around O'Hare are supposedly fleabag flophouses in sketchy neighborhoods. Gimme a feggin' break.

You're right. I didn't read OP's full question, I simply based my comment off of the headline of this thread.

I think they mean the little hotels on Mannheim south of the airport that are not the high end chains like Ramada, etc. The ones where you could pay by the hour.

It's like everyone assumes the OP is completely impoverished and is going to be going to the absolute worst of the worst flophouses in the entire metro area based on the commentary.
