Default satellite friendly apartments

I am moving to Chicago in Jan. and am looking for apartments in Lakeview, Wrigleyville, and Lincoln Park. However, I need to find a place that allows dish satellite. Any suggestions?

They allow them in many places. Call the landlord and ask.

Some of the larger buildings offer cable with the rent to avoid having a hundred ugly dishes hanging all over the building. My friends that live in the Loop have their cable included in with the rent and it has the same channels as direct TV or Dish Network. I think they are given Comcast if I'm not mistaken.

If you can get an apartment with a balconey that faces SW you can install a dish. The landlord cannot tell you no. That said, alot of apartments are installing master dishes for both Dish and DirecTV as well as cable where you just tell them what service you want and they will hook you up. The FCC has recently ruled that landlords can no longer do "exclusive" deals with cable which is probably going to mean the end of "cable as part of the rent" deals. Several larger complexes here are installing master dishes for both Dish and DirecTV so the tenant can order what he wants and the building won't have dozens of dishes hanging all over.

Of course a landlord can tell you you can't have a dish. they can tell you whatever they want- no bikes on the balcony etc.

Speaking from my homeowners association board I am on, YES we can tell people NO dishes. We do it all the time and nobody has ever said boo about it. They can't in all honesty because the association rules state "lawn furniture, bbq grills, and potted plants are the only acceptable items allowed on decks/balconies. Violators are subject to hearings and subsequent fines." Satellite dishes do not fall into any one of those three categories and really nobody seems to mind because many of our residents view them as an eye sore anyway. We get around the monopoly laws due to the fact that there is great TV reception and I realize it only gives you the local channels but I believe by law is all you are entitled to due to the necessity for news and alerts from the government so it's not viewed as a monopoly then.

The FCC has actually ruled homeowners associations can not limit the use of digital satellite services (DirecTV and Dish Network).

The myth that cable offers the same channels is simply not true. Yes, they offer the same network channels, but for those of us who are sports fans, Dish and DirecTV offer dozens of regional sports networks that are not available on cable. In my case, well more than 50% of what I watch is not available on our local cable system.

Not wishing to argue here, but if someone challenged the HOA in question, the HOA would have to relent. The same applies to old-style over-the-air antennas.

Personally, if there still was the ability for HOAs to limit dishes, that would completely eliminate that neighborhood for me. Cable simply is not in the same league as DirecTV or Dish when it comes to things like college hockey, lacrosse, and many other sports that are very important to me.

How could a landlord not tell you no?

Great job for the research.

(This is not soley directed towards you or anyone else in particular...) But I believe the original poster asked about an apartment building, not a place that is ruled by a homeowners association.
