Ugh!!! Living in the food-less hinterlands of Indiana after living in Chicago ... I crave beefs with giardinara dipped ... and pizza .... lord, I haven't had a decent pizza in 5 years!!! There's one guy, a former chicago guy, who lives about 40 minutes from me who has true chicago food, but it's a trip for me, so I can't go all the time! The ethnic foods ... kolacky, paczki .. nobody even knows what they are much less, how to pronouce them! I made kolakcy and distributed them to friends this year and my friend's eyes popped out of their heads when they tasted them!
I'm a hungry hoosier!!!

Downtown Crystal Lake is so nice. I don't know if I've been to that Georgios. They seem to be disappearing from the Chicago area entirely.

I'm surprised that noone knows what a Kolacky is. When I was in Houston, TX., they had three different type of chain stores that sold them like fast food, in tons of varieties. I'm starting to see them in places around the Chicago Suburbs. Maybe they'll get to your place soon. ![]() |

Well what you gotta do is drive up here every couple of months with a few good coolers and go to the Jewel to buy a bunch of Vienna Hot Dogs,Polishes,Mary Ann buns,Gonnella Italian and French Rolls...There are some places (ya gotta look around) that will give you a good break on Italian Sausages and beef and Gyros meat too. Stock up on stuff and you will be fine. Btw-I dont know if you like Lou Malnatis, but in most of their locations you can buy frozen Pizza's for a decent price. Call to make sure first...;-) |

Stuffed pizza, hot dogs (but I DO put ketchup on them), and most recently, italian beefs. I grew up in Chicago and the surrounding area and never liked them til a couple months ago, then I moved to Denver, go figure! There is a place here in Denver that does serve a mean beef and hot dog, named Chicago, fittingly!
All the reading of this thread has made me decide that the last meal I have before I go back to Denver has got to be an italian from Portillos! |
