British girl desperate to move to chicago
Hi
hope you all had a very merry christmas.
I need your help! I am really desperate to move to chicago. My boyfriend moved out there a year ago with his job and have spent a lot of time out there! I absolutely love it there! The problem is he has a working visa, i dont!
I work within the legal profession currently doing a law degree but always open to new ideas!
How can I get out to chicago to live and work?
Thanks in advance
Happy New Year!

Good luck, work visas are hard to get unless you have a specifically in demand skill or you have a company willing to sponsor you, or get a job with a company with office in chicago and then work on them to transfer you there (all of which can be difficult). I know this because at one point I was interested in working and living outside the united states, but when I started to seriously look into it, I realized that it was a rather complicated affair and ended up staying in chicago

You can try this company, although I cannot yet personally vouch for its effectiveness.

I really don't know. My girlfriend is brazilian whom I met in Chicago while she was staying here as an aupair. She's back in brazil now, so the only choice is to use this company or wait to get a student visa for grad school.
Personally, I'm still pretty skeptical about it, but its only $300 so I figured it was worth a shot. We only did it a couple weeks ago so its too early to decide whether it was a waste of money or not.

A British law degree will not be useful here. The British bank HSBC has an American headquarters in a Chicago suburb, and lots of Brits work in it. Getting a job with a home company then getting a transfer is usually the way Americans try to live and work in Europe!

Hi,
BP also has a large presence in Naperville, which is not too far from Chicago. For information, my company are sponsoring my visa and I am going to the US embassy in Lisbon to get it as it takes 2 days compared to 4-6 weeks at the embassy in London.
Good luck.
