There are quite a few old school diners around town. White Palace Grill has already been mentioned:

Moon's Sandwich Shop, a real dump but good food.

Lou Mitchell's, which sits at the beginning of Route 66.

There are also your old neon-lit joints that are not exactly diners but in the same vein

Suzie's - the best looking hot dog stand in Chicago

Superdawg - a famous drive in hot dog stand with car hops

Jeff's Red Hots - no neon but they serve a fine Chicago hot dog with sauerkraut, which is a worthy addition in my opinion

Too bad so many either were torn down or went out of business.

If you want the complete 50's experience, and don't mind driving, head out to West Chicago...

There is a great little retro hot dog stand / diner called Scooby's, replete with neon, and immediately adjacent is a classic drive-in theater called Cascade Drive-In. Blast from the past! I'm still looking for a weekend to try it out, but from the reviews online it sounds great.
