Well, besides their great summers you can take comfort in their huge improvement and success in unemployment numbers and percentages (posted by Magellan in the Mi forum).

Good luck, sincerely; it is certainly beautiful up there and some really great people live there as well! Really, really good people; salt of the earth!

8 Michigan Metropolitan areas (MSAs) beat the national umemployment rates in latest BLS data

United States - 6.3%

56) Ann Arbor - 4.6%
56) Holland - Grand Haven - 4.6%
68) Grand Rapids - Wyoming - 4.8%

If these numbers are accurate, it's a lot better than I thought. I could've sworn the unemployment rate was higher in SW Michigan. Of course, some people might have given up. Others have left the region or the state (lot of brain drain in Michigan). It's also a smaller market than Metro Detroit or Chicagoland so the population is naturally smaller to begin with.

I have to agree with you regarding Michigan, it's people and it's beauty. When I saw Niles and
Benton Harbor I was surprised. Major employers in Niles are the school system, the hospital, Modineer,
Pilkington and Walmart. Benton Harbor has Whirlpool. The only stats I can find are from 2000.
What makes these 2 small cities have 6.1%?

Actually, Detroit declined as well. It's just no longer in the top 20 most populace cities.
