The sidewalks of Hyde Park (e.g. on Ellis Ave) are littered with a smelly fruit (?) that sticks to the bottom of your shoes. For a while I thought I was unfortunate enough to step in dog crap, until I realized it wasn't dog poo but a gift from the beautiful fall foliage.

Does anyone know the name of this tree? and also the name of the fruit?

Yes, this actually seems to be the correct answer. Ellis Ave is lined with yellow petals that look identical to the pictures of the Gingko on Wikipedia.

Visceral UChicago | The University of Chicago Magazine

"Smelling the foul smashed seeds fallen from the gingko trees along Ellis Avenue."

sorry about the Bradford Pears - that's what it is everywhere else in chicago. I guess I outed myself as someone who never really goes to Hyde Park.

That's no problem... I'm just happy I know about TWO species of smelly trees now

I'm curious where do you find the Bradford Pears? Do you see any of them in Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast?

Chinatown, Wrigleyville, Ravenswood, Bryn Mawr, even in the Loop. They are all over the place actually.
