Of course excluding half the city would lower the crime rate, would you be willing to cut off half of NYC in your comparison just to be fair?

You need to stop, think and re-read what I wrote. We're not talking about murders by volume; we're talking about murder rates. Lopping off half of NYC has nothing to do with anything.

Chicago60614 gets it. Although, I probably would have zoned it from Madison to Howard and anything from the Chicago river to the lake. That whole 'north side' zone plus the safe and quiet NW neighborhoods are one Chicago, while the rest is a whole different story.

So yes, if someone simply said, "hey, let's cut half the city out to see if there are less murders", it would be true; you'd still be inclined to dig deeper to see why it's true. Any doofus could tell you that areas with wealth and prosperity (as much of NYC is) have lower crime than poor, drug infested areas.

I can do that area of Chicago you're talking about. From Hyde Park up through the Loop, over to West Town, Logan Square, Avondale, Portage Park, Dunning and all points north have seen 37 murders for 1,232,000 people. Or around 3.0/100,000.

If you just want to do the Loop up through the Near North, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, over to Lincoln Square and points to the north/northwest (excluding Portage Park, Dunning, Avondale, Logan Square), then you have 19 murders for 756,600 people, or 2.5/100,000. Although really 12 of those murders happened in spots around Uptown, Rogers Park, and the random spate of violence along Sheridan in Edgewater. Cut out those areas and you're down to 6 murders for 600,000 people, or 1.0/100,000. Even though though, the murders in Uptown/Edgewater/Rogers Park are fairly concentrated, and not effect all 180,000 people in those neighborhoods. I live in Buena Park, which is in Uptown, but I live in a much different place than those along Wilson.

Thank you, sir.

I just pulled info from NYPD, and it looks like as of 11/21/10 there have been 476 murders in NYC. There are 9 million people in NYC, yes? If so, you'd have a murder rate of 5.2/100,000 if I did my math correctly.

In spite of some isolated incidents the area around Midway Airport is a pretty low crime area on the southwest side.

This is very simply the natural result of the aging of the population.

Apparently Tracy makes an update roughly every week. So we are due one soon.

It looks like they update the spreadsheet before the page. On the spreadsheet it lists a victim on the 26 and 28.
