Ok here's the controversy: CPS closes schools wednesday and thursday, then re-opens on friday when the weather is similar or possibly worse. This is making a lot of people upset.

edit: glass_of_merlot beat me to it

It is. It's not just CPS though, Twp hs dist 113 has school tomorrow too. What's even more ridiculious is that district 109 in Deerfield still had school today. No late start or anything. I don't care if Pulaski Day or President's day is taken away because we had too many cold days. What matters more is that the kids are safe.

I don't mind walking my kid to school in the cold. He has the appropriate clothing and it only takes 15 minutes. But I do feel bad for some of the other kids.

Not only that, but it snowed pretty good up here in the far northwest suburbs the 2nd half of the day, and the roads were awful as of dinner time. So now we DO have blowing & drifting snow, the wind chill advisories are still out for tomorrow when temps will be below zero again in the morning......and school is suddenly back on?

Chicago
I don't think that article really makes a case for for justifying school closures for the last couple days, just look at the conditions they're talking about...

Quote:
The earliest instance I could find of Chicago closing its schools due to winter weather was January 23, 1927—a low of 17 below zero at 8 a.m. with a high of zero.....
The next incidents I could find were in 1966 and 1967; in the midst of a snowstorm in February of the latter year...on January 28, 1977... A high of 19, a low of 13 below, with a maximum wind speed of 29 miles per hour and a max gust speed of 41 miles per hour....A few years later, Chicago set its all-time record: 26 below with a wind chill of 81 below on Sunday, January 10, 1982. City schools were closed the next day, though the low was a balmy two below...Which brings us to the 1990s, when the Sun-Times reported one two-day closure in January 1994 (lows of 15 below and 11 below), and another in January 1997 (wind chills of 40 to 50 below).
None of the weather we've had in the last couple days even approaches those temps.

I'm fine with CPS setting standards of what temps will shut down schools, but they aren't doing that. They're randomly throwing out closures based on....what?

Well I guess they heard you complaining about school being closed and they wanted to make you happy. So you got your wish, be happy.

You should probably make sure that painting is very well protected.

I like how they waited until the roads were covered in ice causing traffc to grind to a halt and then opened the schools.
