I'm looking for an apartment for my mom who gets SSI because of a brain disability she got as an infant. She is currently living with family while I'm away at school but she wants to move out on her own again. The only problem is that she only gets $710 per month. Is there any housing programs that helps with people who are on SSI? I've only heard of housing specifically for seniors but she is only 48 and not yet a senior citizen.

Certain housing programs for seniors will take less than 55/65 if there is a documented disability. Your mother would have to call each program to ask. I would recommend getting on the CHA waitlist. Other buildings, I believe Heiwa Terrace (920 W Lawrence was once one) is a sliding scale building.
