I know families making it on less than 40k, you're good! Don't try and keep up with the Joneses and you'll find yourself living rather well.

I agree; these kind of questions make me laugh. Look at median family incomes and draw a conclusion.

I think when I moved here I was a "young professional" making less than half of that and I actually was just fine.

In your 20s it's good, and you can do better, but late 20s in tech (i.e. software engineering/developer) is one area you might get it if you're in a senior or possibly one step below 'senior' position depending on the company of course.

Manage a team of 9 people who are in a tech related field. I am a bit underpaid honestly.

You'll be fine. I was at around $85K when I was in my late 20's. Had a decent one bedroom condo, no car, no debt. I didn't really follow my spending too much, but I certainly wasn't living lavish or anything like that. I would spend the most excess money on a few trips to Europe each year and a few trip around the USA.

It will get you a very comfortable life with lots of options, but it's not living the high life or anything like that.

In a pricier market like NYC or SF I'm thinking you'd be making at least $150K. You should maybe be at around $120K here if I had to take a wild guess.

Yeah, that's underpaid a little bit. The people under him, if it's at a good firm and at a decent level, should be making what the poster is making in Chicago, at least.
