The organizers and Alderman fed the neighborhood lies about taking into consideration about the neighborhood resident's concerns that the parade and crowd was getting too large and out of control year after year and suggestions over changing the route, starting the parade earlier or making it shorter, or to take it downtown like every other parade were never taken into consideration. CWB found out that the permits were all filed SIX months ago so while details of the parade route were barely released in June, basically organizers said IDGAF but preach about a safer experience.

Oh, 53 parade related arrests now.

Not all parades are downtown. And I think it's a mistake for all parades to be downtown - local parades are part of the flavor of the city. The route was changed, what three years ago? And most of the things function better now than they did. Some of the largeness of it is the result of the recent major, major wins. For better or worse, the Parade will probably start to decline in attendance in coming years as the kinds of victories still needed are not as universally inspiring and things will work themselves out. Throwing in the towel and moving it all downtown would be of minimal use in the long term.

I got talked into going this year and, honestly, I am NEVER going again! It was a horror show. Met up with some people over by Halsted and Broadway. The crowd north of the intersection wasn't too bad, but as you headed south towards Addison, it became a clusterf^ck. It became EXTREMELY DANGEROUS over by the Whole Foods, a massive log jam that led to a very loud shoving match. Watch a drunk girl get knocked down to the ground and almost trampled. Saw people w/ kids freaking out b/c the crowd was so unruly and starting to get violent. We made the attempt to walk through and gave up quickly and just pushed ourselves up against the glass to get out of the way of the crush. My friend (born and raised in Chicago) toldme later that she thinks this is what it felt like to be at that E2 club the night all those people got killed. Just a bad situation overall. I wished we had pick a quieter spot. Stay far away next year, not worth it.

There was a vote something like 9 months ago in which thousands of Lakeview residents voted in regards to whether or not the parade should be kept in Lakeview or moved downtown, and the majority wanted the parade kept in Lakeview.

Sorry for your experience. Walking around is always a pain in the ass, which is why I've always made sure to stay on the same side of the street as my apartment.

That aside, I don't think I will ever understand why some parents think it's a wonderful idea to take their kids to the parade. Even if they don't have any qualms with skin, you have the parade going through an area full of bars, not nearly enough police to stop the vast majority of people from drinking on the street, and you end up with a massive amount of drunk and annoyed people jammed into a tiny space.

Fact is that the same sort of thing eventually killed the Southside St. Patrick's Day Parade -- it got out of hand and locals that really did like the "hang out with friends, family, and fans" aspect got overwhelmed by the "drink till you mess yourself" crowd.

I know quite a few gay folks that specifically use the weekend to get to SW Michigan or Galena or anywhere else that they don't have to deal with the hordes intent on getting sloppy drunk...

I'm gay, but I still don't understand why people would think the parade is family friendly. Do the parents think they can run away before the floats with the gogos and gay porn stars in skimpy underwear go by? It's not like that's a new thing.

That aside, Boystown is a sloppy a mess every weekend, it's just that Pride crams way too many people in between Addison and Belmont on Halsted. I like pride, but Market Days is infinitely more enjoyable. It's easier to have a good time, and you can actually move on Halsted.
