[quote=crouching_tiger;40721283]Both Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley are converts from Hinduism and Sikhism respectively. Both try and distance themselves from their Indian heritage, as if its something to be ashamed of being Indian.

They both were happy to disown their heritage to get political power,The rednecks did not force them to do that.

I find that hard to believe. Unless you are from a very affluent area/elite schools, Ivy League acceptance is so rare -- and so expensive -- it just isn't an issue for the vast majority of Americans.

The tier of students who would be upset about not getting into an Ivy League would end up at the tier just below it. I have a hard time believing anyone would be whining about it. In fact I know they don't.

There is generally enough room at the good state schools for everyone with good grades.

Frankly, it sounds like you have some unresolved, and quite ugly, inferiority issues.

I know about her, too, but I lived in Louisiana and am more familiar with Jindal. He is, imo, a true hypocrite, but he is of Indian descent.

India is a 5000 year old country with a rich culture and heritage that would put any country to shame. Just because there is a lot of poverty there at this moment in history does not mean it was always materially poor. Anyways, they are doing much better economically now. Sadly, the rednecks will never vote for a non-white who embraces his ancestral heritage and roots and doesn't convert to Christianity.
LOL. It's funny watching you add all these exceptions to your erstwhile categorical statement. Let's summarize...

"Southerners are irredeemably racist."

"The governors of two southern states are conspicuous minorities."

"Well yeah, but they're the kind of minorities that irredeemable racists don't mind."

". . ."

Well, if they're conservative enough, then race is thrown out the window. They just have to be "true believers".

So this would make him an Indian Uncle Tom? LOL! (Full disclosure: I am of Indian ethnicity myself.)

Pretty much, yeah. Racists will vote for other races if they espouse the same policies as their own. Even Mississippi would elect a black governor provided he is ultra-conservative.

Jindal is now an *evangelical* Catholic. His parents are Hindu. What is interesting to me is that he was introduced to Christianity after a friend told him he and his parents were going to Hell. It took him two years to convert. He has also participated in an exorcism. His actual name is Piyush, but he named himself after Bobby Brady. Jindal has said he has “no problem” if public schools want to teach creationism or intelligent design. He has also been one of the most vocal defenders of the “Duck Dynasty” reality TV clan. How much of this is out of real conviction and how much is for political support is hard to guess. My grandchildren are half Indian, btw. While they are only culturally Hindu, they have more respect for Hinduism than for Christianity at this point.

OP, certainly racial groups form tribalism against other races. But then, you can look at racial groups breaking down even further into more tribal groups.

As a guy who is half Asian, I can't say I experience much racism if people don't think I am Asian.

Anyways, I never get the issue on referring Asians to being good at math. If something is also humorous and offensive, it is better than if it were only offensive.

Unfortunately, some Asians make it worse for other Asians. I've personally seen Asians do things that I have felt repelled by. Like 1 time recently I was walking through downtown at night, and could see through the windows of a hotel, Asians sitting down and cutting their toe nails in public.

I was once in a shoe store on Lawrence in Albany Park and it was just me and the old owner. And he kept making these loud snort noises, like as if he was about to spit. I eventually left.

Now here's a much lesser situation.

Me and my sister were raised by our Asian grandparents. 1 time when she was 15 years old, she was sleeping over at their apartment. But their apartment had their bathroom in their bedroom. My sister slept on the couch. They were worried if she had to go pee in the middle of the night, she would be afraid to have to go through their bedroom to get to the bathroom. So grandma gave her a bucket. And my sister found it kinda funny. The bucket was for "in case you have to go."

The more ignorant and stupid you are, the more tribal you will be and unfortunately majority of humans are ignorant and stupid and have not evolved to the point of being non-tribal.
Yes. Take a look at Black gangs and Hispanic gangs in Chicago. They don't just tribal against the police. They even tribal against themselves.

And on top of that, they come up with derogatory terms for enemy gangs.

Take the Black gang called GDs (Gangster Disciples) the largest Black gang in Chicago. They're breaking off into different factions now that their top leader is imprisoned and shooting themselves. And there is a derogatory term against them, Glazed Donut.

I once posted a joke in a Black/Hispanic forum of Chicago asking "Say there was a GD working at Dunkin Donuts... and some guy like me walks in, and goes ay, I was wondering if I can get some of them, glazed donuts?"

There's a Hispanic gang in Chicago called SDs (Satan Disciples). Their derogatory term is soggy donut.

My first time posting here, so I feel bad starting off with a negative thread, but this is something I would definitely love to hear people's thoughts on.

Background. I'm Asian-American (born and raised in the U.S.), went to college in the east coast and worked in NYC for 6 years before going to business school, also in the east coast. I had always intended on moving back to NYC after school, but an amazing job opportunity in finance came up in Chicago. Great company, great role, smart people, awesome compensation. I was also really impressed by the city when I visited for my final round interview and started seeing myself living here.

I graduated from business school this year and moved to Chicago on July 1. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment in a luxury building in river north. The amenities are great, the rent is cheap compared to NYC, and I was pretty happy. I only know a handful of people in Chicago, so I've been going out with them a lot to various restaurants, bars, clubs, just to get a feel for the city. This is where the problems started happening. I've been here less than a month, but I've been subject to roughly a dozen racial encounters. By this, I'm referring to people calling me "*****," "****," saying stuff like "it must suck to be Asian," asking me how I speak such good English, telling me that it's unfair that so many Asians are going to elite schools (upon hearing my educational background), etc. Having lived in NYC, where this never happened to me, and where people just don't care about race, I'm alarmed at these incidents.

What's going on here? Is this due to Chicago's racial segregation? Are midwestern whites just more hostile to minorities? I really like Chicago a lot as a city (especially during the summer), and it saddens me that this is tainting my impressions.
Midwesterners are generally narrow minded socialists, I see transplanted ones in NYC act like this to minorities as well, especially towards hispanics.
Now, if a native minority New Yorker expresses a dislike for that type of Midwesterner and acts on it, he is also expressing the same type of racism. It all begins somewhere and loops. Racism disappears when the populace enter a uniculturalism of shared values and culture. This does not necessarily have to involve one race.. People just get along with those who share the same ethics and life patterns. There are Asians who get berated by other Asians for hanging out only with Whites and are asked why they do, and it can be as simple as him feeling more comfortable around them, culturally, ie born in that culture and lived through entire life. I believe racism exists in America due to people holding onto separate heritage, and customs that may clash with those of others.
