this is a city that opens the new northerly island park as a natural paradise, a follow up to the recent 606 and spectacular river walk. "my kind of town" indeed!!!

I'm glad this is happening, but it looks underwhelming compared to the renderings.

Bread and circuses | Define Bread and circuses at Dictionary.com

Quote:
“Two things only the people anxiously desire — bread and circuses.” The government kept the Roman populace happy by distributing free food and staging huge spectacles.

Of course, there's chet popping up to spread his misery.

The park is another great addition to our great lakefront (which I assume you also must be critical of - what a large, wasteful 'circus', better if we had a lakefront more like Cleveland) which essentially cost taxpayers nothing.

I'm excited to check it out this weekend.

Renderings tend to be more vibrant than reality. Dreaming is easier than building it.

In saying that, I think - for what it is - it's rather nice. Once vegetation gets hold it'll be beautiful. I just want this type of stuff done on the West Side as well.

I simply wonder where the MONEY to pay for this came from.

Chicago Park District seems way behind in updating official web site -- Northerly Island | Chicago Park District

Of course it recalls the worst aspects of Illinois' despotic law makers -- Ten years after Meigs Field raid, the makeover of Northerly Island is slow to take shape - Page 2 - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

Dick Simpson, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 44th Ward alderman from 1971-79, said he views the Meigs affair as an example of the autocratic misuse of mayoral power over city government.

"It will be remembered as one of the negative aspects of the Daley regime, along with a rubber-stamp City Council, failures to get the big projects (done) like a third airport" and Daley's inability to revitalize the southeast section of Chicago, said Simpson

act of wanton destruction caused the loss of about $65 million annually in combined revenue sources to the city and state, caused many to loose their jobs, was a factor in the embarrassing decision to not have the 2014 Olympics in Chicago, and is symbolic of how Chicago is not the economic engine it should be.
The destruction of Meigs is symbolic of the economic decay Chicago & Illinois has seen over the last ten years as evidenced by the reduction of US Congressional seats from 19 to 18 due to the census change. People and their business are leaving our once proud state in record numbers ... an active Meigs airport would be pumping $100M into the local economy,

Champion News | Meigs Field and Loss of Revenue
It came from revenues from the ampitheatre, as stated in the tribune article in the first link.

The article says:
Quote:
The park's cost was covered by $6.3 million in federal funds and $3.4 million from the Chicago Park District.
Heckuva a way to blow through FEDERAL dollars...

The "revenue" from the pavilion is NOT all the $3.4 needed and even that is probably hidden in Chicago's notoriously bad bidding practice / no real record keeping --

Did the Chicago Park District sidestep competitive bidding for the Northerly Island concert venue? | WBEZ 91.5 Chicago
Quote:
it seems as if only one bidder (Live Nation) was considered, and that no other company had a chance to bid on it (that is, the 30,000-seat venue as opposed to the 8,000-seat venue)
