Chinatown is authentic Asian in the sense that mostly Chinese people live there, unlike Little Italy, Andersonville and Greektown which have few Italians, Swedish and Greek residents left even though they still have several Italian/Swedish/Greek restaurants and the like. These are what I call "façade" neighborhoods. Chinatown is definitely not a façade neighborhood. It may be the third-largest in the nation but it's quite small compared to San Francisco's, and I would imagine compared to New York and L.A.'s as well.

The terraced rice paddies are particularly impressive.

San Francisco's Chinatown is not very large either, though larger than Chicago's. The narrow streets crowded with small shops, restaurants and people give it a lot more Asian verisimilitude than Chicago's.

According to 2000 census figures, the Armour Square (location of Chinatown) and adjacent Bridgeport neighborhoods have about 16000 Asian residents.
