Ha, yes between this one and the one about annexing suburbs, I think they're reading multiple threads on here. Can't wait for their top story this weekend about whitewater kayaking!

If it wasn't for different in School districts suburbs maintaining their own. There is much less today to prevent these bordering suburbs from merging with the city? Certainly not much lower taxes today. Many themselves seen as declined even today ?

The author makes some decent arguments, but people need to realize that cities are evaluated on the strengths and weaknesses of their metros these days. Chicagoland will still have at least 2.5-3 million more people than metro Houston in 2030. Would anyone make an argument that Houston is a more important city than San Francisco, Boston, or Washington D.C.?

That said, I am all for consolidating some units of government in this state. I've always thought the Des Plaines river would make a nice Western boundary for the city. Northern suburbs would never go for consolidation but Lincolnwood would make sense. As the article mentions, certain suburbs in southern Cook County will soon become obsolete if not for some kind of major intervention.

This thread is something like 11 pages so I can't read through it all... but...

Houston (667 square miles) is huge compared to Chicago (234 square miles).
I have a very difficult time comparing the two. Apples. Oranges.
You couldn't pay me to live in Houston. I need my public transportation hah.

Houston does have excellent public transportation... You drive your car for 30mi a day on public highways. Can't get any more public than that.

I thought this was an interesting article:

http://chicago.curbed.com/2017/4/19/...s-annex-growth

The article talks about how for some suburbs it could be a win-win situation. In theory I don't like the idea of annexation nowadays, especially since many of the would-be annexed suburbs have their own woes to deal with. Chicago would also be annexing those crime rates and other problems (I'm thinking Harvey, Dolton, etc.).

Somewhat related topic.... The city of LA passes 4 million residents

Los Angeles hits a milestone: 4 million people and counting

Quote:
Los Angeles gained 42,470 people between 2016 and 2017.

That might not seem like a lot, but it was enough to push the city’s population over the 4-million mark — to 4,041,707, according to a new state report.

Not reading through the whole thread, but the answer for me is

WHO CARES

Houston could surpass Chicago in population and it wouldn't change the fact that Chicago is just the far superior place, a more important city, etc. etc.

Who eyes Houston as a place they're jonesing to visit or live in?

Even if this happens, it does not matter. Metropolitan area population is the stat that is important here. Not to mention other factors such as connectivity, Global City tier, etc.

Nothing against Houston, though. The main reason people move there is the economy, and affordability. It's a dynamic place, but not for everyone.
