Ouch, sorry to hear that...Piece of advice in case it happens again : try to figure out who is the "leader" of the pack. If you show him you are not afraid and are ready to fight back, most of the time they will beat it and go somewhere else. But yes, just most of the time, not always :-s
Does that kind of thing happen a lot in Chicago ?

Dude, that sucks. Hope you feel better soon.
I was jumped many, many, many years back on Halloween in Streamwood and was subjected to a beatdown by 5 big guys. They didnt take my wallet, didnt punch me in the face or anything, but stole my friends' pillow case full of candy. I had bruises and broken blood vessels all over my chest and back, and one on my neck. I know the feeling, and it sucks. Hang in there. And remember, let the law handle them. I know it can be hard to confine vengeful feelings, but dont get yourself in trouble with the law by taking matters into your own hands, if you know what I mean.

It happens, it's just random, and USUALLY depends on where you are in the city. I've been here 7 years, and I've never known anyone who was attacked or had a problem with crime.
I know it does happen though, I see things on the news multiple times a year about random attacks in my neighborhood.

I think that's real bad advice here in Chicago, if you run into the wrong person mugging you they will either harm you badly or kill you and not think twice if you do something like that. It's a horrible situation, but best thing in a mugging is always to give em what they want and get it over with quickly. Other situations may be different if you truly feel your life is in jeopardy.
Recover quickly, dragoro.
