Every place has some kind of racial tension. Chicago is not immuned. There are segregated sections of Chicago. There are some mixed areas of Chicago.

Ran these ideas by my friend at dinner last night...I said I hadn't seen much racial tension in Chicago area and he said I need to spend more time in his hometown of Beverly... (only reporting what he said as I haven't spent much time in Beverly and have no opinion on it)... I guess I've been lucky to live in areas w/out much racial tension.

Umm, that's pretty flimsy. Maybe you can come back with some details or examples or have your friend sign on and explain. While not perfect Beverly is far ahead of a lot of neighborhoods in achieving a good racial balance and harmony.

Yeah agree, I shouldn't really post about "what a friend of a friend" told me. Just thought it interesting that he had such a completely different perspective than mine... I'll see if I can get him to sign on and explain... Good idea...

There is an article in the Trib today about the 10000 block of Wood st in East Beverly as a model of stable integration. This is more the Beverly I know.

Upon closer inspection, it is tomorrow's paper, front page article.

Curious!?!
Why is interracial segregation between the north and Southside so prevalent among African-Americans? It is mind-boggling to hear how much the Southside (minus Hyde Park/Beverly/Woodlawn) is degraded and looked down upon by other AA's that live on the Northside or other parts of town. I am wondering if this stems from Chicago's notoriety of being the most segregated city in America, or if there is some other history here that I am missing?
I am looking for solid, constructive answers on why this might be. Again, just very curious, since I move this weekend and just wanted some conversation on the topic from some of you native Chicagoans.
Thanks

Can you give examples of this? I am a former Southsider (currently living in non-diverse Northwest Indiana town) and can't say that I feel any particular disgust toward Southside blacks. Maybe I'm not understanding the question.
