I know this has been asked before but I wanted to see if I can get more specifics based on my needs.

Located in Northeast/Midwest/midatlantic

Within about an hour or so of a larger city

3br 2 ba about 1500 sq ft decent (meaning little to no renovations) home for around 400k

Walkable to a lively strip of stuff (restaurants, coffee shop, maybe a nice convenience store or farmers market, people watching) from my house (.5 mile or less)

Decent economy with job availability (we're in accounting so we're not specialized in a specific niche field)

Can you name a place in my price range?? Helpppp

Have you looked in Oak Park, Illinois? Or Evanston, too.

Thanks - those are on the list. I was wondering about others as well.

I'm familiar with Oak Park and Evanston to a degree - do most feel safe raising a kid there? As a single person I don't have any worries. However, wondering if it's the kind of place one would feel comfy letting their teenager ride bike alone without worries.

Ok thanks. Maybe I'm just paranoid. I know oak park borders some rougher areas and kids seem to think they're invincible.

You could add Wilmette, Glen Ellyn and Elmhurst to your list --

I live close to Oak Park and work in Oak Park. While I do not have children currently, we are considering having a child, and would have no hesitation raising a child in Oak Park. I also take the green line to/from Downtown frequently and at all hours and have no issue on the train. I feel Oak Park is better connected to public transit than Evanston, maybe because Oak Park is smaller, but nonetheless. Evanston also borders Rogers Park, a specific area that is pretty dangerous near the Howard Red Line. You aren't going to be able to live in a bubble but you can choose a generally safe area where most of your activities are done.

Because of the express service Metra offers, many towns that are farther out are actually a shorter commute than those that border Chicago.

I second the Elmhurst idea. Downtown is fun, cute, and lively. The train ride to downtown Chicago is quick and would provide you with plenty of job opportunity. Also, the price range falls within your budget and it is kid friendly, good schools, etc.

I don't think you're going to find a good 400K house in Oak Park. Don't forget, most of these locales will have 10K/ year in property taxes. Do you have kids, do schools matter?

You might look into the Chicago Suburbs forum, too.
