Hey guys -

I apologize if this topic has been beaten to death...

I'll be moving to chicago for the summer for work. I'll be working in elk grove village but would like to live in the city if possible.. I know if I don't live in the city I'm only going to make occasional trips into the city over the weekend, and I really want to experience all chicago has to offer...

How bad would the morning traffic be? I assume it would be tough, but since its only for a summer I think i'll be up for it..

Chicago and Elk Grove border each other, so depending on where you live in Chicago and where you work in Elk Grove, your commute could be anywhere from maybe 15 minutes to well over an hour. You'll need to be a lot more specific about where you'd be working and where you want to live if you want us to be able to help you.

I dont think there is anywhere near the airport in Chicago to live where the commute to Elk Grove would be 15 minutes unless its 4 in the morning on Sunday averaging 50 mph.;-)I would say 25 minutes and up. Elk Grove only borders the western edge of the airport. There are only so many ways to drive around it to Elk Grove.

You can also buy a 1br condo in the area for as low as 90k and as high as 140k.
If it's just for one summer, I don't think you'd need to live that far out. You wouldn't really get much of the city feel you seem to be looking for out there. If you're driving, pick a place nearish the Kennedy Expressway and grin and bear it. Pick a nice, fun neighborhood and you can look back on your longish commute with amusement as you shuffle back to your apartment after a concert or a killer dinner or a street festival.

I dont think he/she wants to waste 3 hours each day in the summer commuting to and from work either.

That would be an excellent option.

Thanks for the replies guys..

I do have one additional question. Are there better or less congested ways to get to elk grove from downtown other than taking kennedy?

Just by looking at mapquest, it looks like I could get there by taking 290 with some combination of side streets...is this feasible?

Usually no,unless there is major traffic on 90. 290 can get just as bad if not worse at certain times of the day. Grand Ave or a combo of Lake and Grand is one of the better ways. Also Irving Park to Elston and Elston in.
