I see on Google Streetview that there's a lot of greenspace between Ping Tom Park and Roosevelt on the eastern shore of the Chicago River there's a lot of greenspace. Are there plans to turn that into parkland or is it going to become something else? It seems like a great area for making a park as Chinatown and South Loop develops and become much denser.

There have been various plans through the years. This seems to be the current plan.

Rezko! Blagojevich! TIFs! Kickbacks! Prison!

Quote:
But Chicago denied the TIF request after Rezko was caught in a minority contracting scandal, which acted as a bit of foreshadowing to Rezko's connections with Blagojevich and various kickback mechanisms that have since landed Rezko over 10 years in prison. Riverside Park has since remained a general eyesore, even prompting Mayor Emanuel's administration to attempt to acquire the site in 2014.
And THAT is why Chicago languishes...

Thanks for that link! It seems like an extension or adjacent park would be amazing, but it looks more like it's in for development. It's such a ridiculously large site in the heart of the city that it seems absurd that it's been sitting for so long.

It is inaccessible from 3 sides and it has several railroad tracks running through the heart of it as well as a subway. I read somewhere that the ground was contaminated as well.

Seems more likely that the area south of Harrison on Canal/Clinton/Jefferson would develop first. Now that area is desolate, but the transit infrastructure is all there.

Related bought it - who is certainly better than Rezko - they might have more legit plans for it than Rezko, but that's a big site. I'll be surprised if there's any solid movement on it in the next 5 years. But hey - you never know..I guess. Related hasn't even unveiled their plans for the Spire site - and no timeline for it either.

The area north of it aka "River South", will probably get some real action long before it as they've already unveiled the plans. However, large sites like these take so long to go through the city that it would still be at least a few years before even River South starts, if it ever does.

A lot of that space is going to be devoted to construction of road networks and I recall one of the road networks being adjusted to cater to S Delano Court but I could be wrong and that proposal probably never left the table.

It'd be nice if the City did re-acquire it and put another Botanical Garden there (you can never have enough).

Previous mentions are right, however, on the theory that anything processed will take 5+ years to even get City approval. There's a lot of back log in River South TIF and a lot of political pressure NOT to invest more in the "questionable" downtown TIFs.
If anyone wants to follow along with some TIF projects (and this will likely be one of them) Chicago has a Data Portal item for TIF-funded infrastructure spending throughout the City here: Data Portal Link to TIF spending

I previously worked in budget City Hall.

May the inefficiency and refusal to adopt speedy informational systems forever plague Chicago's infrastructure and litigious development.
