Luck of the draw. These places are usually owner managed and sometimes owner occupied . . .
And a lot of these owner-managed/occupied places were either bought back when you couldn't give away property in the area and/or it's already paid off...

Yep. Rent income pays the tax bill plus utilities and profit. No need to gouge for a lot of the owners. It can be a pain living in an owner occupied building, as some owners are very particular. Still, these places exist. You just have to look around. A lot of renters are in no hurry to move.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. Can you repeat it for me?

I hope this topic hasn't been beaten to death, but I went through several pages of threads and did not come accross my situation-so here I am. I have been made aware of an internal corporate transfer within the financial services company I work for. Currently, I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the job is Downtown Chicago. What advice, if any, can someone give me about relocating to Chicago from South Florida? Perhaps someone else here has done this move? I am married, 29 and make a good living, so housing shouldn't be too big a problem-I hope. I am looking at Wrigleyville or Lincoln Park as possible relocation sites; I am going to rent before trying to purchase. Anyway, just looking for some direction, climate (winter), rents, commute times, mass transit...things like this. I was in Chicago once, so I am in no way familar with the city.

Thank you and regards,
Well you will be in the midwest, hope you like it here. The weather is very diverse, although the commute can be tough at times.
