I would just stay in one of the hotels by Midway. Prices for hotels are really cheap right now if you know how to work the Priceline NYOP system. I just stayed at Hotel Felix for $54/nt (4* hotel downtown) and Hotel Indigo (3.5* hotel, gold coast) for a similar price. So I'm sure you can get a hotel near midway even cheaper than that.

Driving to United Center from the janky motels near Midway will take a solid 35 minutes and require driving either WAY out of their way while experiencing nearly every twisted excuse for Chicago's expressways or crossing through some fairly bleak parts of Chicago via surface streets with poorly timed stoplights. Public transit is arguably worse -- hoof it up to the Green Line to catch the Orange Line in the Loop and then out to Midway and then deal with a bus to some scary motel. That will be twice as time consuming and no fun at all...

The cluster of motels near Midway seems like a setting for a bad crime movie, where lots of drug deals go wrong ...

Exactly. They do that with apartment rental listings too. If you find one you like, look on the AirBNB map and pick an intersection of streets nearby and we'll tell you if it's good and if it'll be quiet.

There also isn't much in the way of restaurants and bars in the immediate vicinity.
Agreed. Wouldn't walk from somewhere like Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, University Village, etc to there. Drive should be easy and if you don't want to drive, then get a cab or an uber/lyft/whatever the latest ride sharing option is.

I mean, you don't want to stay an hour from the UC but basing your hotel on easily getting to the UC is silly. You're going there once in the 3 days you'll be here. You'll be going out for meals multiple times a day. Stay somewhere with easy access to restaurants/bars and other attractions.

I will check out Hillside...I've been dealing with car problems and plumbing problems all week, haven't had any time to get back to my search so I haven't finalized anything yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Odd choice, but it's not my vacation.
