Default Edgewater Places

Hello. My wife and I are moving to Edgewater in the 5600 N Sheridan block. Where are the best places to eat, hang out, buy groceries? What areas should be avoided? Is it safe to walk around after dark if need be? How long does it take to get downtown riding the bus or train? Thanks

There's a Dominics on Glenlake & Broadway and a Jewel on Berwyn & Broadway for food. As for sketchy areas, Thorndale can be a little touch and go, but I never had any problems. The 147 bus to downtown generally takes about 30 minutes and the red line a little under an hour.

There's also a Dominick's at Sheridan and Foster (5200N) although it's dumpy compared to the one on Broadway. As for sketchy areas, I'd be a little careful in most of the area between Sheridan and Broadway (called the "Kenmore-Winthrop Corridor" named after the two streets that run through it) although that area is actually a lot better than it used to be. As for dining options, the only restaurants I can picture in that immediate vicinity are a couple on Sheridan between Foster and Bryn Mawr: Wing Hoe (Chinese), and Tedino's (Italian). There are also a few places scattered about on Broadway but I'm not familiar with them. A little further, Argyle (5000N) has a Vietnamese strip between Sheridan and Broadway with lots of Asian restaurants, some good, some not so much. And about a mile or so west of you there's Andersonville (Clark Street) which has lots of different eateries (everything from American to Swedish to Thai to Middle Eastern). Also on Granville (6200N) about a block west of Sheridan, there's a pretty decent Thai restaurant on the ground floor of the Sovereign apartment building called "Thai Grill & Noodle Bar".

Put Andersonville on the top of your list. It's the westernmost part of Edgewater, and basically has it's own neighborhood identity. Andersonville has become a real "destination neighborhood" for people across the city, and the commercial strip along Clark Street is booming. Also, the stretch of Bryn Mawr near the "L" stop has really gotten better in the past few years. It used to be a haven for drug dealers, but is quite beautiful and now has restaurants, coffee shops, and a fancy bakery.

Oh yeah, I forgot. That strip on Bryn Mawr even has a Francesca's now.

So is this area pretty much safe to walk through to get to Broadway? I like to go for walks and don't want to end up some where sketchy.

I live in Edgewater, on Winthrop, and I can't say your experiences will be anything like mine, but I love to walk too, and I have night classes, so I'm always getting in late, and thus far, I haven't met any sort of problem.

Default 5600 N Sheridan Crime Report:

Sheridan Rd. Crime (I recommend including a block or two West, so search 5400-5699.)

ChicagopPolice.org report on 5600 N Sheridan

Also, the cross street @ 5600 N Sheridan is the 1000 block of W Bryn Mawr:

Bryn Mawr Ave. Crime

ChicagopPolice.org report on 1000 W Bryn Mawr

Enjoy the info!
