I'm considering coming to see a Cubs game from Indy this weekend and am looking to find out what the easiest routes would be via public transit coming from the south. I drove in to a game last year, and it was utterly maddening.

No route is going to be totally "hassle free" but you might consider taking the South Shore line from someplace like CHESTERTON / Dune Park to Millennium Park Station, then hoofing over to the Red Line -- https://goo.gl/maps/W21p2opGKdE2

That will take about two hours, about double what a "no traffic" drive on the SkyWay / Lake Shore Drive would take...

I think you'd be going a little bit out of your way too, assuming you rely on I-65, but Chesterton has a fairly well used train station that is not quite as scary as some on the South Shore line, you might shave 15 minutes off your drive if you instead head to Miller Beach, but when it is cold / gets dark early that might not be a great option...

If you don't want to drive, here are your options: (btw, the only train service near Noblesville would be
Amtrak, which you would have to catch in Indianapolis).

Chicago to Noblesville by train, bus, car, plane, taxi

I don't mind to park at a station in Chicago then come in. I was looking at the red line but have struggled to find nearby parking. I just don't want to drive anywhere near Wrigley or the Loop.

There would be only the slimmest reduction in "hassle" by driving all the way into the Loop.

If the OP is looking to avoid the hassles of driving it is probably fair to assume they want to minimize the bottlenecks -- having driven through the I-65 junction area I would think that is something absolutely worth avoiding. If they are more concerned with just the snarls close to Wrigley Field it might make sense to try see the Cross Town Classic, when the Sox & Cubs play at US Cellular, those games will July 25 & 26...

If the want to avoid "north side traffic" they could exit the Dan Ryan for any Cubs game, park near US Cellular and then ride the Red Line to Wrigley, strange, but doable...

if there's no sox game that day, I'd park for free between 33rd-35th street on the west side of the dan ryan. from there you can walk right to the red line and take the train to wrigley.

If you already have a ventra card, you might wanna park on 33rd street by the redline cuz it's an even shorter walk.

this is my go-to parking spot when I wanna go downtown without having to pay for parking while still being in a safe area if you return late at night.

also, by parking here, the OP avoids the byrne interchange and the hellish traffic that ALWAYS comes along with it and/or driving thru downtown on lake shore drive.

Drive to South Shore Train Station in Hammond Indiana, they have parking there. Take the train to end of the line Millennium Station (Randolph Street Station). When you go upstairs go left on Randolph Street (the street address is 150 North). Walk to State Street (one block) then look for the Red Line entrance, you can't miss it. Stand on the L platform that says Howard and take it to Addison Street.
