Because Chicago has less gentrification, so the Chinese stay in the original Chinatown.

In cities with stronger real estate markets, the legacy Chinatowns are replaced by newer Chinatowns. Chicago's Chinatown has historically been surrounded by blight, freeways and train tracks, protecting the area.

And the article is a bit misleading. Other cities don't have fading Chinatowns. They have different Chinatowns over different eras. Places like Flushing, Sunset Park, or San Gabriel Valley are like 10x the size of Chicago Chinatown, but they aren't the original Chinatown. Doesn't mean they aren't packed, urban and vibrant.

It is a really difficult stretch to call San Gabriel Valley packed, urban or vibrant. Right on with Flushing and Sunset Park though.

Slightly related--aren't there several other more pan-East Asian-y neighborhoods in Chicago as well as in the suburbs? I'm going to guess that most residents of Chinatown aren't exactly wealthy when coming here, so where does the wealthier Chinese/Chinese-American community live?

I love Chicago's Chinatown. It has loads of character and a traditional, authentic feel without being excessively touristy.
