Come August, I'll be looking for a room in an apartment for between $450 to $625 per month including utilities. I won't have a job at first, but will be able to pay for six months upfront--I'll provide bank statements as proof. Although my car will stay with me for a bit, I'm hoping to use public transportation almost exclusively. A place near the El or reliable bus stops would be ideal. I've lived and worked in rougher areas before, but would prefer not to live in the wastelands of the west side, Englewood or South Shore.

Which neighborhoods should I look at?

May be able to find something in Edgewater, Logans Square or Rogers Park. See lots of advertisements on craigslist. Especially from females looking for other female roomates.

Thanks for the advice. I'm male, which disqualifies me from some roommate situations. Besides Craigslist, what are some good websites to find places to live? The South Side tends to be cheaper, but many of the landlords don't post on Craigslist. Are there particular neighborhoods to scout for prospective tenant signs?

We listed our room for rent (near Oak Park, $575 including utilities) on Craigslist, Zillow, and Hotpads.

I tried Hotpads and found most of the listings to be misleading or suspicious. Zillow I'll try. Mostly I use it to look at cheap homes in Detroit for amusement.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I recall seeing some pretty cheap rooms in Albany Park on Craigslist recently. But as someone else mentioned, you might be able to find something in Edgewater or Logan's Square in your range. I found both of my apartments on Craigslist (though neither with roommates) and never had any luck walking neighborhoods for signs (but I was only looking on the north side). Someone else on these forums posted a link to a Bridgeport newspaper that had ads for apartments. You might also want to look into Pilsen if you are considering south side/west side neighborhoods.

Thanks Snowden. What about McKinley Park? I used to live there.
