It's a complex issue that often needs coordination with mental health and substance abuse treatment, but I think a new focus on what's called "Housing First," where homeless are provided with secure housing even as mental health and substance abuse treatment is getting lined up for them, is a step in the right direction even if it is thus far underfunded. Multiple studies, though, have demonstrated that even doing nothing costs taxpayers over $30,000 per year per homeless person in emergency and law enforcement services so it can actually be more frugal to provide proactive housing than to do nothing. If we saved that $30,000 per person and also managed to transition a higher percentage of homeless from being either homeless or dependent to being self-sufficient taxpayers themselves a good program would be able to pay for itself.
Excellent post.

OP, try MAC Properties. Their website says they offer short term rentals. It'll be in the Hyde Park neighborhood, but give them a call and check it out. Also, try the U of C Marketplace. There's often students who need to sublet their apartments.

I've often seen Hotel Lugo on Craigslist starting at $90 weekly in Pilsen...but it looks very low class. Not sure if you'd be willing to try it short-term.

There are three In Town Suites in the far suburbs with weekly rates often a bit under $300 (plus tax?). They look decent in photos but is the clientele poor? Any locals here know ?

Lugo Hotel $325/month. Mostly low-class Mexican workers, some I imagine that don't speak English.

I have driven past all three locations and had clients stay the Downers Grove location. They are decent spots, at least as well run as a "Red Roof Inn" or similar value priced motel. The weekly rate is actually more like $160 -- Chicago Extended Stay Properties | InTown Suites Clients that had a 10 ten delay between closing on selling and purchase were happy not to pay for a more costly hotel that they did not need...

The locations are on not "upscale" but neither are they are unsafe. The DG location is especially suited to folks with a need to be in the Loop -- is close enough to the Metra station at Belmont that it is actually served by the #465 Pace bus or you could even walk in under 20 minutes. There is a McDonalds literally across the street so the lack things like "free breakfast" is easy to deal with. There is also a Culver's (regional fast food chain) right next door and even a pretty decent pub up the street. That said, a car really would make staying there much easier as Ogden is a primary artery that can be used an alternative to the tollway all the way into Chicago.

The OP talks about needing to potentially spend six month in a motel, and at $1200+ / mo it seems nuts to do that but maybe it actually prices out against staying in a dorm -- the new spots are priced for "cost is no object" crowd -- High-end "super dorms" find home in the Loop - Chicago Tribune
