I disagree. But if you hang out in their habitat, then naturally thats all you'll find.

What is a trixie? Is this a regional expression, or some of that slang you young folk like to use?

I've never in any way associated how much money a person has with whether they do or do not own a car in Chicago.

I'm quite well off, and have a lot of friends who are quite well off, and none of us own cars. We all did before moving to the city, but living on the north side I learned within a year that I hated my car more than it was worth. I've been without for 4 years and never looked back.

That said, I have plenty of friends who are quite well off, and definitely want to keep their cars. I also have friends with no money who need a car, and friends with no money who don't even want a car.

I really don't see a huge correlation here like you would in the suburbs (where you need a car).

It all depends on where you live and where you work. If you live on the far northwest side and work in the burbs, well then yeah - you're going to want a car. If you live at Sheffield and Diversey and you work downtown - a car is probably much more of a hassle than it's worth.

Not to mention living and working in the city - owning a car is going to be MUCH more expensive than shelling out $75 per month to go anywhere in the city anytime you want. I figure between gas, insurance, stickers, registration, car payments and fixing it when it breaks down, I save thousands every year by ditching the car.

Also, how is a car so much more reliable than public transit to get to work? I would think having a train come every 3 mintues, and taking 15 minutes to get to work gives me a much better idea of how long it's going to take me to get to work every day (it takes between 22 and 28 minutes) than if I was dealing with rush hour traffic and jams every day. Who knows if traffic is going to be light and you get there in 20 minutes, or if it's really bad or raining/snowing/sunny/foggy, etc and it takes you 50 minutes.

I guess I really don't get the logic of the original post...

Yeah, me too. From 1995-1999 I had to commute to work in a part of suburbia where there was no public transportation nearby, so a car was a necessity. But in 2000, after I was allowed to transfer to the company's downtown office, I did fine taking the bus to work. I realized I was using my car only once every 2-3 weeks, yet paying over $2500/year just between off-street parking and insurance, not to mention gas, maintenance/repairs, vehicle stickers, etc. I realized my cost per trip was enormous.

When my car finally died in late 2000, I got rid of it. Didn't buy another one, and gave up my parking space.
