Default Is this a good area? (1140 N. LaSalle St.)

Hi all,

I'm doing an apt search and found this posting about a studio apt at W Division St & N LaSalle St. (the exact location is 1140 N LaSalle St.).

There is a Clark/Division Red line nearby and supposedly it's located on the boarder of the Gold Coast and Old Town.

Is this a good area for a single female to live by herself? I see that there are some 24 hrs stores around (Jewel, Walgreens etc) and I'd like to be able to go shopping at those stores at night and feel safe.

Oh, and I went to the following link (Plan Your Trip With the RTA!) and put addresses for the studio above (1140 N LaSalle St) and my new job (I wanted to see which bus/train I should take to get to work and for how long), and I got the result saying that it can not recognize the studio address. I can locate that address in Google map though. Any thoughts?

Any inputs/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Very good area from what I've seen. My bank is at clark and division so I'm down there regularly. I wouldn't mind living in that area at all.

Cream-of-the-crop part of the city. Very, very expensive brownstones in the area (though more to the east toward the lake). However, this is one of those cases where a few blocks makes a big difference. Once you get a couple blocks west to Sedgwick and beyond, crime really ticks upward. That's where Cabrini Green is (yes, it's still there even if the towers are gone) and even the mixed-income housing areas are a bit dicey. So bottom line is, don't wander further west than Wells late at night and you should be OK.

Try making La Salle two words. I've noticed people spell it both ways...

Thank you everyone for your inputs so far! I do appreciate all of them, as I am apt hunting out-of-town and have never lived in Chicago.

Thanks Drover for bringing Cabrini Green to my attention. I've heard about it, but never knew it was so close to the studio I am looking at! I will be sure to be away from those areas esp. at night. Any other areas around that I should avoid?

aragx6, I thought it was a good suggestion, and went ahead and made La Salle two words, but still no result. It recognizes N La Salle St., but not the street # for some reason.

Thank you everyone so far!

Thanks aragx6! My new job will be at N. Wacker Drive - that's the financial district in Chicago, right?

You will probably want to take the La Salle bus straight down to whichever block of Wacker you are working on -- La Salle is about three streets east of the north-south portion of Wacker, which I believe that's where you are saying you'll be working -- the Merc? The Red Line might be quicker into the Loop, but the walk west to Wacker would be longer.

Thank you Johnny Northside for the info! I guess, once starting a new job, I will try different ways to get to work and see which one I prefer. Thanks again.

Probably depend on the weather to. When it's nice, the walk would surely do you good. When it's like this outside... not so much!
