I'll be attending a conference, and will bring wife & kid with.
We're staying near the intersection of N Michigan & E Wacker.

Is that a safe area to walk around, even in the evenings?
Are there any decent Asian restaurants nearby that the locals can recommend?

TIA

Safe to walk around, I would say yes, due to the crowd.

I know there are some Japanese restaurants nearby. 1 might be called Oyshi?

Underground on the NW corner of Michigan and Wacker is a staircase. Take it and get yourself a goat burger.

I think "is it safe" threads should be banned just like chicago crime statistics threads have been.

I have only been here a few months and am completely sick of people asking the same question.

Totally agree - if these people are so afraid then why do they even make plans to come here in the first place? And OP is bringing wife and kid - how concerned can he be to make that plan before asking anyone anyway? Geez...Michigan and Wacker!!!!! How about a sticky that links to a map of Chicago crimes - something like this:

sometimes you have no choice, either for work, or some other reason..
I can't imagine making this a vacation destination, but, after living here 40+ years, I have a demented/realistic perspective on this place..

Thanks for making visitors to our city so welcome!

Yes, it is quite safe. It will be a little quieter in the evenings compared with the days, but it is smack in the middle of downtown and there will be lots of tourists around. It is a great starting point to explore the city.

Is one of the busiest intersections with the highest density of tourists in the entire city safe to walk around?

Sorry to not be welcoming, but at some point it does become insulting to the city...and to c-d when they can't be bothered to read anything before asking the all-important "will I be safe on the Magnificent Mile?".
