And ^^ sounds like a good argument for apartments with carpet. So that doesn't apply to apartments with wooden floors? Edit: I had a cat for 8 years and she only urinated on the carpet once.

there's other kind of pet damage, landlords do not want to take the chance.. damage like peeing on the hardwood floor, the acid in the pee can wreck the wood as it seeps in (hope you are not eating lunch); dogs do damage as to leaving that wet dog smell all over; dogs and cats with fingernails and toenails can poke little holes in stuff with their nails, like when the cat climbs up on the window sills; by the way, kids can put handprints/dirt on the walls , so I guess everyone that is not an adult can mess things up, by the way, adult people wreck apartments when they have parties that get outta control.. sheesh.. the more I think about this the more I think I don't want to be a landlord.

I think 4 cats is pushing it. When it comes to apartments or renting from someone, you shouldn't push your luck with so many pets as that many won't be accepted. When you own a place, then go ahead and knock yourself out!

Ditto about Uptown. We had a neighbor there who owned 4 dogs with no hassle. Also one apartment I rented in Humbodlt Park was part of a 3 flat where the landlord's sister ran a cat rescue from her apartment and would often have had many as 12 cats in there (it was a large 3 bedroom). I think a pet loving landlord will let you in w/ 4 cats, especially those who know/understand that a neutered, well taken care of cat is less likely to damage an apartment that a toddler.

Now, the problem here is that the type of landlords willing to overlook the 4 cats, the types who typically own smaller buildings tend not to have wheelchair accessible housing. Even a garden or first floor apartment is likely to have steps, unless it has already been retrofitted for wheelchairs. Buildings that are wheelchair friendly tend to be in larger apartment buildings and high rises and these are exactly the sort of buildings that hold to their rigid pet rules and will be less likely to allow 4 cats.
