Anyone have any experiences with traveling either from O'Hare or Midway on Thanksgiving day morning? I'm deciding on if it would be worth doing that. I imagine the crowds wouldn't be as bad as on Tuesday and Wednesday but maybe I am missing something.

The biggest "unknown" is ALWAYS the WEATHER conditions. I have had a few years where things have been a dream -- you get to the airport and the place looks nearly shutdown as there is no traffic after an easy few days of dry, clear weather when folks faced no delays. OTOH I have also faced some terrible times where storms before and and on Thanksgiving have made a mess of the scheduled flights and airlines have sent folks crisscrossing the country trying to get travelers to their destination. That of course translates into shortages of cabs and bewildered folks trying to meet loved ones at the airport only to be left circling while a few dozen planes all queue up for a handful of skelton staffed gates...

TSA and the other security details are always scaled DOWN as they do not want to pay too many folks "holiday time" so you need to plan accordingly -- if there have been delays due to weather that will mean all the folks at the airport will have a jump on you for any rescheduled flights for departures.

The arrivals side is a whole other story -- I've told family and friends in those circumstances to fly into Milwaukee, Gary or even Rockford to avoid the nightmare and have gladly paid the upcharges for those less used airports that are far less congested. The time on the road is generally FASTER than waiting for a gate at O'Hare or MDY (I suspect that similar nightmares would result at Amtrak which has a notorious record for delays but I would tell any family member foolish enough to try that they have to use Metra to get to the burbs...) I have also driven down to St. Louis and back up here same day to pick up family on the "other side" of a storm front so that everyone could be together for an ill relative's last chance to see all the kids...

Wednesday and Sunday are by far the busiest. Thursday should actually be fairly calm given it's the busiest holiday to travel of the year, and that LA and Chicago as of last year were the busiest airports that holiday.

He means security checkpoints at the airport. And he isn't concerned about traffic since he's taking the El.
