Fast food aint why people are fat. Its their lazyness and lack of self control. Aint it just like americans to always find someone else to blame instead of taking responsuibility for their own actions.

Well... I think we can look at a lot of other factors that are causing healthcare premiums to skyrocket. It's not like people are dying more or having more heart attacks than before -- thanks to preventative care, the opposite is true. Of course, when that preventative care is not covered by insurance because it's "optional", then the person doesn't get preventative care... and the costs rise.

Perhaps it's the 40 million people who don't have access to health insurance (and sometimes it's not a cost issue, it's an availability issue) that contributes. Many of those bills go unpaid. Perhaps it's fresh graduate doctors making $500,000 a year (not the standard perhaps, but this is an actual number) that contributes. Perhaps it's hospitals charing $10 for a Tylenol.

Fast food isn't necessairly healthy, but check out the nutrition facts. You might find some fast food is actually healther and lower in fat than many high-end restaurants, who often soak their food in butter.

Having said that, I'm not a big fast food guy, but I certainly know of many people who are thin, in great shape, and they eat fast food regularly. There's more that goes into it.

Well... that's an actual number of a good friend of mine -- and this is the first job right after residency. True, this person is a specialist and an extremely good student -- but it does happen.

Okay, it's clear you aren't going to believe what I say, and I don't care. But I know the facts in this one particular case, and I doubt it's the only case. Then again, maybe it is, who knows?

Just a guess -- university hospitals probably don't overpay as bad as private hospitals, as they work largely on taxpayers' money.

UMich is one of the hardest hospitals to get hired at in the country and also considered one of the best.

hey OP, there's a KFC right downtown, near the intersection of Wabash and Harrison and I think there is still one near 35th and archer. I went to the one on Wabash recently (I'm not really a fried chicken fan, but was seriously craving KFC for some reason) and was SHOCKED by how expensive they had become! maybe it's a regional thing (this was only my second time at an IL KFC since I'm originally from Boston) but it seems like you get less food for far more $$$. it cost me over $6 for 2 pieces of chicken (not white meat), 2 itty bitty sides, and a drink (I remember this same meal being closer ot $4 in Boston not too long ago). never mind the fact that the chicken was overly salty and greasy and the biscuit (once my favorite thing about KFC) was crunchy and stale. nope, after that experience, I'm done w/ KFC. I sure, I've been to Chinese fast food joints that served better fried chicken than this KFC.

yeah, I think, w/ fast food, it's a combo of people wanting to eat healthy AND people wanting to save money. when I want to do the former, I get a sub from Subway or grab a specialty salad from Quiznos/Wendy's. when I want to eat cheap, I grab something from the dollar menu at Mickey D's. KFC is neither healthy nor cheap nowadays.

Also the one that was nearest me, at Broadway and Buena (4200N), closed sometime last year. I didn't go there often, but did like to every once in awhile. I thought their chicken was OK (I liked the Extra Crispy), although it did bother my stomach a little sometimes (too much grease, maybe?). I did like some of their side dishes.

El Pollo Loco, maybe? (Although I think they specialize in flame-grilled chicken, not fried.) They're pretty popular out West, and lately I've noticed they're starting to pop up in Chicago. I've never tried it, but one will be opening soon in Uptown (Sheridan/Wilson) so maybe I'll try it then.

I've also seen Church's in Hispanic neighborhoods (Pilsen, etc.).

Seriously. Pollo Campero. They're HUGE in Latin America and growing like crazy here in the states.
