I have a job offer that is close to California station on the Blue Line. I am totally new to the train system. I have a salary of about 30,000 and a wife who stays home with toddler. We need to find a place along the blue line or any other route that you think would be easy to get to Logan Square California station. I have a car, and my budget is about 1400 a month for rental. I know that is more than what I am making, but I can go into my savings and be ok for a while. So, we obviously like everyone else want a safe place, number one, and then a place that has kids in the area. Do you recommend something along the blue line, or any suburbs where I can take the train and live in decent area, or is this too much to ask with too little money? Thanks for any help.

I'd live near the California Blue Line station actually.

Used to live 3 blocks from it in a welfare-rooming house paying $375/month but no women allowed.

Anyways, do apartment searches with the keyword Logan Square.

Is there a second income source, $1400 rent for 30K income sounds insane.

Thanks for the tips, yeah, it was just going to be a temporary job until I could find another. I had to pass on it, so thank you for replying and I wish you the best. I appreciate your help.

In the context of gross percentages the OP would be spending over 50% of their income on housing. That is not sustainable for any length of time, especially with a car and family. The challenge is that while $30K is a decent sum for a single person the added expenses of a family will leave no room for any unexpected costs. Heck, even paying for normal "wear and tear" items for a car with Chicago's notoriously pot-holed roads could quickly put the OP behind the eight-ball...

OP probably should try to find a much less costly spot, farther north / west should be more affordable and still have modest commute

The neighborhoods along the Stevenson are probably more the affordable / livable, though commute time would be substantially increased... http://chicago.curbed.com/2014/6/12/...ent-in-chicago
